Moonlight streams through the window panes as he rolls over slowly in bed. His eyes squint at the light. Frodo is sitting on the bed, smiling down at him.
“Why are you up so late, Mister Frodo?” he finds himself answering. You fool, Frodo is gone, you’re only asleep now… “Best be gettin’ your sleep now.”
Crystalline eyes shine with mirth and Frodo shifts. The bed creaks. “Oh, Sam, I’ve had plenty of rest. You know that.” As he tilts his head, Sam can see the scars on his neck beyond the collar of his linen shirt. He fights back the memories of the War; Frodo’s presence is to be cherished now.
Sam wants to sit up, properly see the other as it’s been years and Frodo looks just the same as he did. His hair has not faded, his skin is still smooth as porcelain, his eyes, oh his eyes, they have not aged a day. Frodo has not changed a bit, and he can’t think how grateful he is that he recognizes every feature, every crease and every wrinkle, as little as they are. The bed is just so comfortable, though, and he can’t bring himself to move himself up.
“Sam, you’ll be ready soon.”
His eyes close for a moment. “I know, Mister Frodo.”
“You know, they’ll be alright. You’ve raised them so well. They’re all so beautiful, Sam.” When he meets his gaze again, Frodo’s eyes are shining again, bright as the moon.
“I know, Mister Frodo,” he repeats. He’s still very tired, and it is true that he has been thinking about this for several years. With Rosie gone now, though, it is inevitable. “D’you suppose they’ll miss me?” His eyes are shut again. He needn’t make sure that Frodo is still there, for they will be seeing each other soon enough.
“Oh, I’m certain of it. The world will barely go on without Samwise the Stouthearted.” The smile on Frodo’s voice is soothing. Sam can feel himself slipping back into slumber when he feels gentle fingers on his large ears and a kiss placed upon his brow. Oh, this feeling is so familiar. Heartbreaking in the past, yes, but oh so comforting. He will see Frodo again soon.
“Mm, I s’pose you’re right, Mister Frodo. I’ll be seein’ you, then…” He is fading again as Frodo speaks gently into his ear.
